Get your paddles ready! This charming city in Ontario is home to rivers and scenic waterways, making it a gorgeous spot for a canoeing adventure.

Peterborough is a riverside city in the picturesque Kawarthas region, about 1.5 hours from Toronto.

According to Reader's Digest, it's known as the "Canoe Capital of the World," with countless sparkling waters waiting to be explored.

You can paddle your way around some of the region's signature canoe routes, which were once travelled by voyageurs. These routes include the Upper Indian River, where you can enjoy stunning scenery, and the Serpentine Loop at Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park, which takes you past swimming spots and wildlife.

According to Peterborough County, one of the region's most bucket list-worthy experiences is the Peterborough Lift Lock, where you can ascend the world's highest hydraulic lift lock by canoe.

You don't want to miss a trip to the Canadian Canoe Museum, home to the "world's largest collection of paddled watercraft."

The museum features guided tours and interactive exhibits and was even named one of the "Best Cultural Spots" on National Geographic's Best of the World 2024.

In addition to canoe-themed experiences, Peterborough offers a range of outdoor activities, museums, galleries and more. The historic downtown is brimming with quaint boutiques and cozy cafes where you can enjoy some shopping and delicious treats.

With its waterside charm, winding rivers, and unique experiences, the "Canoe Capital of the World" is worth adding to your bucket list.
