Neustadt is a tiny, old-world village nestled in scenic Grey County. The town has German roots dating back to the mid-1800s and boasts stone shops, historic buildings, and a cozy fall atmosphere.
Meaning "new town" in German, Neustadt was founded in 1856 by German settler David Winkler. Initially, the town consisted of a sawmill, with a flour and grist mill following the next year, attracting other German-speaking settlers.
The European influence is still visible today, from the enchanting streets to the cozy eateries and artisanal boutiques. It's even been dubbed one of the "prettiest towns in Ontario," making it a beautiful spot to experience.
You can stroll through the downtown and visit some of the quaint shops the region has to offer. Granny's General Store will transport you back in time with its baked goods and old-world charm. You'll also want to check out Atelier 522, a European-inspired gift boutique filled with seasonal finds, and grab a sweet treat at It's My Pleasure bakeshop.
You don't want to miss out on a stop at the Neustadt Springs Brewery. Founded in 1859, the brewery, now Neustadt Springs, is said to be the "oldest operating original brewery building in Ontario" and is located on "one of the finest sources of pure spring water in all of Canada," according to the website.
You can enjoy a beer or cider as you relax in the crisp autumn air and soak up the historic charm. The venue also hosts an Oktoberfest celebration that will whisk you away to Germany.
Fall also brings some magical views to the town's Trail of Dreams, a creekside path that takes you past whimsical installations and beautiful foliage.
You can find more scenic strolls at the nearby Sulphur Spring Conservation Area, which features fiery colours and a natural sulphur spring.
For more autumn adventures, you can head to Chloemeadow Farms, located just 20 minutes from Neustadt, where you'll find pumpkins, squash, and other harvest goods.
With old-world shops, colourful leaves, and European vibes, Neustadt is an enchanting hidden gem to visit this fall.
