Ontario has so many beautiful destinations to explore during the summer, and this hidden gem village is worth adding to your bucket list. Nestled on sparkling waters, the destination looks like a little slice of Europe with its old-world streets and historic charm.

Located about a three-hour drive from Toronto, this waterfront community is full of summertime magic and is a dreamy spot for a getaway.

Gananoque is a historic village perched along the St. Lawrence River in the scenic 1000 Islands region. The town is known as the "Gateway to the 1000 Islands" and is "internationally recognized as one of Eastern Ontario's most stunning waterfront communities," according to the website.

Dating to the 1700s, when the first European settlers laid down roots, this historic village is brimming with old‑world architecture, stone buildings, and storybook streets, offering a charming taste of Europe right here in Ontario.

There's so much to enjoy in the area during the summer months. You can see a theatre performance at the Thousand Islands Playhouse and check out one of the province's largest outdoor contemporary art exhibits at Confederation Park.

Another spot to visit is the 1000 Islands History Museum, where you can learn about the area's past and explore the beautiful surrounding trails.

You can also wander through the downtown, popping into the local shops and enjoying treats from ice cream parlours and bakeries.

If you're craving a unique experience, you can head to the 1000 Islands Drive-In and watch a movie beneath the stars.

There are several beaches worth exploring in the area. Joel Stone Beach, located in town, features a sandy shoreline and a splash pad. For more swimming options, you can head to Grass Creek Park or Landon Bay, a scenic spot along the 1000 Islands Parkway.

The 1000 Islands itself is a "sightseer's paradise" and an incredible spot to explore. It's home to nearly 2,000 islands, as well as attractions including helicopter tours, cruises, historic landmarks, and more.

Bring your passport along and take a trip to Boldt Castle — a fairytale palace hidden on an island in New York State.

If you're looking for a dreamy summer escape that doesn't require a plane ticket, Gananoque feels like a European fairytale hidden along the shores of the St. Lawrence River.
