You could be entitled to hundreds of dollars.
September is here, and with it comes another round of government benefits and credits you may be eligible for. In the month of September 2024, many Canadians can receive a bunch of financial aid from both federal and provincial programs.
Eligible Ontario residents should be on the lookout for the September Ontario Trillium Benefit payment, which provides monthly support to low- to moderate-income households across the province.
According to the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), it's essential to verify your Ontario Trillium Benefit eligibility, as you could be entitled to receive hundreds of dollars depending on factors such as your income, age and family size.
Here's everything you need to know about the September 2024 Ontario Trillium Benefit and how much you can get.
What is the Ontario Trillium Benefit?
The Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) is a tax-free monthly payment that helps low- to moderate-income Ontario residents manage the costs of energy bills, sales tax, and property taxes.
This benefit combines three different credits: the Northern Ontario Energy Credit, the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, and the Ontario Sales Tax Credit.
To qualify for the Ontario Trillium Benefit, you must be eligible for at least one of these three credits.
Who is eligible for the Ontario Trillium Benefit?
To be eligible for the OTB, you must have filed your 2023 income tax return, even if you had no income. The CRA determines your eligibility based on the information in your tax return.
If you missed the April 30, 2024 tax filing deadline, it's still important to submit your return as soon as possible, as the CRA uses this data to assess eligibility for payments.
For married or common-law partners, the Ontario Sales Tax Credit is issued based on the first assessed tax return, while the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit and Northern Ontario Energy Credit are given to the person who filed the ON-BEN application form, with no impact on the payment amount.
If you're turning 18 before June 2025, ensure you've filed your 2023 tax return by the deadline to receive payments once you turn 18, if eligible.
How much can you receive from the Ontario Trillium Benefit?
The amount you receive from the Ontario Trillium Benefit depends on several factors, including your age, income, family size, residence and the amount you pay in rent or property tax.
The three credits that make up the OTB have different payout amounts:
- The Northern Ontario Energy Credit offers up to $180 for singles or $277 for families.
- The Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit can pay up to $1,248 if you're between 18 and 65 years old, or up to $1,421 if you're 65 or older.
- The Ontario Sales Tax Credit provides up to $360.
Your total OTB payment will be based on your eligibility for one or more of these credits.
When do Ontario Trillium Benefit payments go out?
The next OTB payment is scheduled for September 10, 2024. Payments are typically issued on the 10th of each month, unless it falls on a weekend or holiday, in which case it goes out on the last working day before the 10th.
The remaining 2024 payment dates are as follows:
- October 10, 2024
- November 8, 2024
- December 10, 2024
However, if your 2024 OTB annual entitlement is $360 or less, you should have received the entire amount as a lump-sum payment in the first payment month, which is usually July.
