A new Amazon distribution centre is coming to Ottawa. On Tuesday, the E-commerce giant announced plans to build a second warehouse in the National Capital Region, bringing more than 1,000 new jobs. Amazon's new warehouse in Ottawa is expected to open next year.

On June 30, Amazon Canada confirmed that a brand new distribution centre would be built in the Ottawa suburb of Barrhaven, with operations scheduled to begin in 2021.

The whopping 450,000 square foot facility will focus on shipping smaller items, including books, electronics and toys.

According to a news release from Amazon Canada, items the warehouse will packed and shipped by robots, as well as human employees.

The new facility will bring over 1,000 jobs to the capital city, and to Barrhaven in particular. Full time staff will start on $16 per hour, “with comprehensive benefits.”

Full-time employees will receive medical, vision and dental coverage, as well as performance-based bonuses, “starting on day one.”

The company also offers a program called “Career Choice.” They’ll pay up to 95% of your tuition for in-demand courses, “regardless of whether the skills are relevant to a career at Amazon.”

Examples of degrees that other employees have pursued include game design, nursing, radiology and IT programming.

The company will also be opening five new delivery stations across Ontario in Whitby, Oakville, Cambridge, Brampton, and Scarborough.

These centres will also bring hundreds of permanent, full-time and part-time jobs to Ottawa.

According to Amazon, some roles will also offer employees “the opportunity to build their own small business delivering Amazon packages, and independent contractors the flexibility to be their own boss and create their own schedule delivering for Amazon Flex.”

Mayor Jim Watson spoke about the new warehouse in the city, praising the company for choosing “once again” to open a distribution center in Ottawa.

"This facility will create more than 1,000 jobs for our residents when it opens in 2021,” the mayor said, “and it will help keep employment strong in our city.''

This is the second distribution facility that Amazon has opened in Ottawa, after the company opened their first warehouse in the city in 2019.

The company hired around 600 employees across multiple positions for their first warehouse.
