Trudeau Admits He's On The Fence About His Kids Going To School This September

He's having "very active discussions" with his family.

It could be a long summer vacation for Justin Trudeau’s kids! As students across the country prepare to return to school in September, the prime minister has admitted he’s still not sure if his family will restart this summer. Class sizes and how his kids feel about wearing masks are both factors being considered, he told reporters.

Speaking at a press conference on August 19, with the new finance minister Chrystia Freeland, Trudeau was asked if he intends to send his children back to school in September.

“Like so many parents, that’s something that we are in very active discussions on,” he began.

The PM explained that the federal government would support the provinces as they continue to make plans for the school year ahead, noting that they have “important decisions” to make to ensure that kids will be safe.

Trudeau went on, “There is a lot of reflection in a lot of households, including mine, as to what’s going to happen when September rolls around.”

While he didn’t have a direct answer to the question, he admitted that his family were considering several factors.

“We are looking at what the school’s plans are, we’re looking at class sizes, we’re looking at how the kids are feeling about wearing masks,” he said.

This isn’t the first time the prime minister has admitted feeling wary about sending his kids to school during the pandemic.

Back in May, when some Quebec schools were preparing to reopen, Trudeau was asked whether he’d let his own children go back.

“I don’t know,” he said at the time. “I would make that decision probably at the last minute.”

As the PM’s three kids all attend school in Ontario, the family could have a little longer to make a final decision.

On August 18, Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced that school boards in the province will now be allowed to stagger their start dates by up to two weeks.

While the prime minister’s family have had an extended summer break this year, it seems the Trudeaus have been keeping busy during their time off.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau has posted some pretty cute photos of their family-time, including a sweet candid of Justin in dad-mode!
