Canada’s first lady has voiced her admiration for America’s new vice president, Kamala Harris.

In a powerful Instagram post shared on Sunday afternoon, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau acknowledged Harris’ historic election victory.

“Yesterday, when Kamala Harris became the first woman to be elected Vice President of the United States of America, history was made,” she began.

She went on to say that having “courageous women” in office would help future generations to make further progress and build a future that’s based on equality.

Tagging the new VP in her post, Mrs. Trudeau added, “Madam Vice President-elect, millions of women and girls ran by your side, and now we will take every step forward together.”

She also shared her well-wishes with Joe Biden.

Kamala Harris made history this weekend when she was projected as America’s first-ever female vice president. She’s also the first woman of colour to take on the role.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland shared her own "very personal congratulations" with the new VP, describing her as “an inspiration to women & girls and to people of colour across our continent.”
