Health Canada has officially approved the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for kids in Canada who are between 12 and 15 years old.

This means the vaccine has now been approved for all adults over the age of 12, as Canadians aged 16 and up have already been given the go-ahead from Health Canada.

Speaking during a press conference on Wednesday, May 5, top officials from Health Canada confirmed the announcement, describing it as a "significant milestone in Canada's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic."

Dr. Supriya Sharma, Health Canada's chief medical adviser, added that it would be the first COVID-19 vaccine authorized for use in children in Canada.

The announcement comes just weeks after Pfizer confirmed that its COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective in teens and kids as young as 12 years old, following trials earlier this year.

Sharma added that the company has "ongoing trials for younger age groups," adding that a submission for kids aged between 5 and 11 years old is expected as early as September 2021.
