Hurricane Laura Remnants Are Coming North & Atlantic Canada Is Getting Soaked

It's going to be a soaker! Hurricane Laura's path has remnants of the storm bringing heavy downpours and strong winds to Atlantic Canada. Some parts of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland could get 50 millimetres of rain.

The Weather Network is forecasting lots of rain, strong wind gusts and possible thunderstorms for Atlantic Canada this weekend and through to Monday.

Remnants of Hurricane Laura and a warm front moving through Eastern Canada will combine for a soaker of a storm.

It all starts on Saturday afternoon with the rain moving into New Brunswick, P.E.I. and Nova Scotia along with the wind. Most of the downpour will happen at night though.

Then through the overnight hours and early on Sunday morning, the storm will impact Newfoundland.

As of Monday, anywhere from 15 to 50 millimetres of rain could fall across the region.

If there's a thunderstorm, rainfall amounts will be more than expected.

Some heaviest totals are expected to be in northern New Brunswick along with southern and eastern Nova Scotia.

Newfoundland will be the hardest hit with 50 millimetres forecasted for the southern coast and 20 to 30 millimetres for the rest of the province.

Laura could actually regain post-tropical strength when it comes to Atlantic waters so that's something to look out for!

Winds are expected to reach gusts between 30 and 40 km/h in Cape Breton on Saturday afternoon but that could reach more than 70 km/h in southern parts of the province overnight.

It could also exceed 70 km/h in southern Newfoundland on Sunday afternoon.

There is also a risk for thunderstorms on that day in P.E.I. and eastern parts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

After the storm passes, temperatures will stay on the cool side in the region.

However, they could be near or above seasonal for the Labour Day long weekend.

Earlier in August, the forecast for the Atlantic hurricane season was updated and Canadians are being told to prepare for stormy weather.

There could be 19 to 25 named storms, seven to 11 hurricanes and three to six major ones at category three or higher.

The season goes until the end of November.
