This Remote Florida Island Is Like A Window Into The Milky Way

The barrier island of St. George holds miles of undeveloped beach, perfect for year-round fishing, sunsets, and general beach bum shenanigans. But it’s at night when this island really shines, with the chance to see stars, planets, and brilliant celestial bodies.
The staff is even working towards making the island a designated Dark Sky Park with the International Dark Sky Association, just like central Florida's Kissimmee Prairie Preserve.

While the park closes at dusk, there are several ways you can stick around once night falls to appreciate the otherworldly beauty.
You can reserve a campsite, which is $24 for either a regular tent or an RV. You can also buy a Florida State Parks Family Annual Pass, which allows you to apply for an after-hours permit.
Admission to the park is just $6 per vehicle, where you’ll get to enjoy sugary white sand beaches, crystal blue water, and potentially even catch glimpses of dolphins and other wildlife.
There are plenty of good trails to check out here too, hiking through pine forests and lush undergrowth.
The untouched shores are a great place for shell hunting, and during the summer months, you’ll even see nesting sea turtles.
