The financial cost due to COVID-19 hospitalizations across Canada is proving to be no joking matter.

From January 2020 to March 2021, there were 9,390 COVID-19 hospitalizations reported involving the ICU, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI).

The average estimated cost to the hospital for those stays was $50,592. So, if you're looking to purchase a home here in Canada worth $600,000, you'd need a down payment of around $35,000, which means that a hospital stay could cover it and more.

The average estimated cost per COVID-19 hospitalization was $23,111, which is three times more costly than the average estimated cost of a hospital stay for a heart attack.

The average length of stay in hospital was 15 days, which is five days longer than the average length of stay for a kidney transplant.

Between 2019 and 2020, Canadian hospitals spent over $55 billion, not including Quebec and Nunavut, according to CIHI.
