You don't need to hop on a plane to enjoy a little taste of autumn in Europe. This short train ride takes you to a magical lakeside city with old-world streets and historic charm.

During the fall, it transforms into a cozy gem complete with warm cafes, leaf-filled parks and sweet bakeries.

Kingston is an enchanting destination that sits along the shores of Lake Ontario. It's known as the "Limestone City" due to its historic buildings, which add timeless charm.

Just 2.5 hours from Toronto by VIA Rail, it's a convenient spot for a car-free autumn getaway. The train station is a short ride from downtown, so you'll need to grab a taxi, ride-share, or hop on public transit to reach the city's core.

The downtown is dotted with stone cafes and bakeries that look like they belong in a storybook. You can enjoy that European lifestyle as you sip warm beverages on sun-filled patios and bite into pastries.

There are also a variety of restaurants to enjoy, from sushi spots to pizzerias and dessert destinations.

The city was basically made for the Halloween season. Its rich history and old-world vibes make it the perfect spot to enjoy some spooky fun. According to Visit Kingston, it's a "ghost's dream city" as there are "tons of historic stone homes to creep around in and plenty of dark alleyways and narrow streets to jump out from."

You can head to Fort Fright — a haunted house experience that takes place annually at Fort Henry. Or, step inside Kingston Penitentiary — the historic prison where eerie legends still linger.

If you're looking for some not-so-scary autumn fun, you can head to Springer Market Square for the Kingston Public Market, where you'll find all sorts of harvest goods.

Or, take a cruise around the stunning 1000 Islands region, where you'll see islands and coasts blanketed in autumn colours.

If you're looking for a fall escape that doesn't require a car, this magical city will have you feeling like you hopped on a plane to Europe.
