A funeral procession and service was held on Monday in honour of the late Toronto Police Constable Jeffrey Northrup, who died in the line of duty earlier this month.

Constable Northrup, who served on the 52 Division, responded to a call in an underground parking lot near City Hall with his partner on July 2, where he was struck and killed by a vehicle in an "intentional and deliberate act," according to Chief James Ramer.

Northrup's funeral began with a Toronto police procession, complete with officers on horseback and a marching band.

The funeral was held at 1 p.m. at BMO Field in Toronto, and the procession marched throughout Lakeshore Boulevard and Ontario Drive before the ceremony at 10:30 a.m.

Hundreds of officers marched together side-by-side as they made their way to the Exhibition Place.

Thousands of people attended the funeral, including Mayor John Tory and Premier Doug Ford. Police were asked to position themselves on both sides of Princes' Boulevard to honour the funeral cavalcade as they went by.

Those in attendance, including Northrup's friends, loved ones and fellow officers, stood in the stands as the national anthem rang out across the stadium.

According to a Toronto police news release, a 31-year-old has been charged with first-degree murder in connection to the death of a serving officer.
