An Ontario driver is "lucky to be alive" after a flying tire smashed into her windshield on Tuesday.

The OPP reported that the incident, which took place on Highway 401 westbound, occurred after a wheel separated from a car travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the damaged vehicle, who escaped with minor injuries, claimed she had seconds to react after witnessing the tire bounce towards her windshield.

"I, as quickly as I could, took a look to see if there was anywhere I could go to escape this tire and not cause injury or accident to anyone else and I looked back and thought this it, I am going to die, this is the end" she recounted.

The OPP is warning drivers to always double-check the installation of their summer tires.
