GTA Residents Keep Travelling To Niagara-On-The-Lake During The Stay-At-Home Order

By-law enforcement officers are monitoring areas that typically draw crowds.

The extension of Ontario's stay-at-home order appears to be lost on some GTA residents, with thousands caught travelling to Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) last weekend.

According to the town, a total of 10,751 vehicles were tracked entering NOTL between May 15 and 16, marking a 24% increase from the previous weekend.

Approximately 116,000 mobile devices were tracked entering NOTL between May 14 to 16, with 35% of that traffic being traced to residents of the Greater Toronto Area. This marks a 20% increase of GTA residents entering the town from the week before.

Ontario is currently under a stay-at-home order, which means residents should not be travelling outside of their region for non-essential purposes. NOTL has told Narcity that by-law enforcement will continue to patrol areas that see high traffic in the town.

"Town By-law Enforcement Officers continue to monitor and patrol areas that typically draw crowds and respond to reports of contraventions to emergency orders," a spokesperson for the town told Narcity. "Staff has also been redeployed to assist By-law Enforcement Officers in educating the public about Provincial regulations, Public Health requirements, and to break up any gatherings," they added.
