Toronto Tenants Are Storming Their Landlord's House To Demand An End To Mass Evictions

On Monday evening, Toronto tenants will confront their landlord David Zolty, CEO of Ranee Management, to put an end to what they are calling mass evictions.

The group of tenants plans to show up at his residence at 45 Sultana Avenue to deliver their message.*

According to Evictions Ontario and Peoples Defence Toronto, Ranee Properties took more than 170 families to the Landlord-Tenant Board for evictions between November and December 2020.

Ranee Management owns nearly 50 residential properties across Toronto.

"Since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, and as we go through this second lockdown, Ranee Management has time and again shown that it values profit over the safety and security of our community," said Sajid Shaikh of the Goodwood Tenants Union (GTU).

Tenants state that David Zolty has the power to immediately halt eviction applications in buildings owned by Ranee and tenants are demanding he does so immediately.

Narcity has reached out to Zolty for his response and has not heard back at the time of publication.

"We know that Zolty can afford our demand for rent relief, rather than add more people to our overcrowded shelters and deepen the homelessness crisis," said Carly Tisdall of the GTU.

"However David has decided to profit off of his pandemic rather than work with us to find a solution."

At 8 p.m. tonight, tenants will attempt to force Zolty to address the eviction crisis occurring in his buildings by sharing their message in person.
