This BC small town with quaint shops overlooking an idyllic waterfront is the perfect getaway

Want a fall escape?

A person on a beach. Right: Someone in a small town in BC.

BC Ferries trip to Bowen Island from Vancouver.

Editor

Just a ferry ride away from Vancouver awaits this cozy little town, with charming streets overlooking the scenic waterfront. Surrounding the town center are rocky beaches, lush forest trails, and tranquil views.

It's the perfect weekend escape from the city if you're craving a slice of small-town living as the weather gets colder.

This is Bowen Island, a tiny island just 20 minutes away from West Vancouver on BC Ferries that manages to feel like a complete escape from the hustle and bustle of downtown. You can head over for an afternoon, full day, weekend, or however long you need o soak in the laid-back vibes and slow pace of Bowen.

Stepping off the ferry in Snug Cove, you'll be greeted by a pretty waterfront. You can head up to The Snug Cafe, which is as cozy as it sounds and has tasty treats.

Then a short walk up the hill and you'll find Artisan's Square — a hub for local businesses. Roam around and you'll find everything from cute clothes and beautiful artwork to home goods in the vibrant shops.

Exploring the small and picturesque community is the recipe for a wholesome afternoon.

It's just the beginning of what you can do on the island, though. Scattered around are hiking trails, lookouts, and scenic beaches. Mount Gardner is the highest peak on the island if you're up for a trek, but the view makes it worth the effort.

The beaches are pebbly but perfect to lie out on and take in the view of the water and distant mountains.

A great way to see the nature of the island is cycling around it, and there are e-bike rentals there to make the hills a bit easier.

If you want to make a weekend out of it, you can take your pick of stays, with retreats like Alderwood Farm and Nectar Yoga Retreat.
