One of Canada's 'most charming' small towns is this quaint spot set on an island in BC

Cute shops and picturesque streets await.

Editor

This little community feels almost too charming to be real. Historic buildings line the picturesque streets, minutes away from an idyllic waterfront where boats are bobbing in a harbour. It feels like a town from a romance novel, with charm bursting at its seams.

As if it couldn't get more picture-perfect, it's also set on Vancouver Island – a place where the most beautiful parts of nature collide — making the backyard of this town rainforest hikes, world-renowned beaches, and breathtaking rocky coastlines.

That, and more, all work together to make Duncan, B.C. a special place — earning it a spot on the Betway Inside ranking of the "The most charming small towns in Canada". Duncan landed in fourth place on the ranking, behind it's fellow-B.C. community of Langley.

Duncan is actually a city, but its got a certain charm that lends itself to a small-town feel. The downtown area is full of Victorian-era buildings, quaint shops and picturesque storefronts.

Spend the day here popping in and out of the local spots, from book stores and antique shops to chocolatiers.

Wandering around town you'll notice the many totem polls, which is why it's known as "The City of Totems."

"Downtown Duncan features over 40 beautifully carved totems by Indigenous artists from across Vancouver Island, Canada and as far away as New Zealand," the tourism website says.

You can grab a walking tour map from the Cowichan Valley Museum to learn about the history of each one, or check out the virtual tour. The Cowichan Valley Museum is a great spot to visit in town to dive into some of the history of the area. You also can't miss the Duncan Farmers’ Market, which runs every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is one of the oldest year-round farmer' markets in B.C.

Just outside of downtown, about 15 minutes away, is the Maple Bay Marina. The little bay is where you can get waterfront views on a visit, enjoying a picnic or a stroll. There's also lots of stunning hikes in the area if you're looking for an adventure, like Mount Tzouhalem.

If you want a getaway full of beauty and charm, this is the spot.
