This small B.C. city sits along the picturesque waterfront, on the beautiful Vancouver Island. With eclectic shops and a somewhat funky vibe this city has personality and an individuality to it. It all works to make it a fun spot to visit, but still, it remains under the radar.

Canadians have taken notice, dubbing it one of the most underrated small cities in the country, on the Narcity Facebook Group.

While Victoria is typically the spot that catches people's attention on Vancouver Island (and we don't blame them) Nanaimo is a destination in its own right. A trip here is full of thrift shopping, dilly-dallying at cute cafes and cool shops, and enjoying the beauty that comes along with a visit to basically anywhere in the area.

You've got great food and things to do, and it's all set along the water — making it that much better. Plus, you've got the untamed nature of Vancouver Island right in the backyard. Weekend getaway destinations from here include places like the world-famous beach town of Tofino and its white sand beaches.

Or, opt to hop on a ferry to explore the tiny islands nearby. Gabriola Island – where the famous Malaspina Galleries are — is just a 30-minute ferry ride away.

If you want to explore unique sandstone formations along the coats without getting on a ferry you can head to Jack Point and Biggs Park in Nanaimo.

Then you have the fact that it comes at a lower price tag compared to other B.C. cities. According to Living Wage BC the living wage here is $23.79. Compared to Metro Vancouver ($27.05) and Victoria ($26.78), that's a win.

So, you've got affordability, city amenities, and stunning nature — it's not hard to see why people call this spot underrated.
