Nestled on the western coast of Vancouver Island is a small town where waves wash up onto soft white sand, and beaches blend into thick rainforests teeming with life.

It's a uniquely breathtaking place, and one that draws in visitors every summer to get a taste of the quaint beach town, incredible views, and unforgettable nature.

CBC has released its list of the top 10 travel destinations in Canada, sent in by listeners and narrowed down after almost 50,000 votes were cast. Each of the 10 spots to make the list is beautiful – from the red cliffs of P.E.I to the Newfoundland town where icebergs and whales are part of a trip's scenery.

Tofino, though, was the only B.C. destination to make it into the final list, and while the province has a lot to offer — the small town represents it well.

The little town is a famous destination, with a rugged and untamed natural beauty that's balanced with the amenities of town (think award-winning restaurants, quaint shops, luxurious accommodations, and lots of tour options).

Surfing is at the forefront of a visit here for many. Pulling into town you'll pass by a few signs advertising surf rentals, giving the community a classic beach feel. Take your pick and grab a board, because heading out onto the water is a must here.

If braving the chilly water isn't your thing, have no fear. The wind-swept beaches flanked by rolling mountains are worth a visit, surf board in toe or not.

There are many sandy shores in Tofino, ranging from the 16-kilometre Long Beach to the cozy corner of Tonquin Beach.

The coastal beauty of this place is unmatched, but what really sets it apart is the thick forest of the Pacific Rim National Park right beside it all. Boardwalk trails can wind you past incredible old growth trees and the lush scenery of the rainforest here, as you breathe in the fresh air.

It's a place you go to feel completely rejuvenated, thanks to the tranquillity of nature.

There's lots of stay options here, but camping is a go-to for many. It's hard to beat going to sleep under a blanket of stars and waking up steps away from the sand.

Tofino is just over five hours from Vancouver — a scenic road trip that involves a BC Ferries trip. Wherever you're coming from though, it's worth making the journey to this unbelievable place.
