BC Still Has No School Outbreaks Of COVID-19 As Cases Keep Climbing

While the curve doesn't seem to be flattening much in the province, there hasn't been an outbreak of COVID-19 in B.C. schools.

On Thursday, September 24, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry spoke at a press conference and updated B.C. on the COVID-19 situation.

"When there is a potential school exposure, the first thing that happens [...] is public health steps in to conduct contact tracing and assess the risk, " said Dr. Henry.

Schools then issue alerts when there is an exposure and they're all posted online and are accessible through the BCCDC website.

Although there have been approximately 30 exposures at schools, particularly at schools in Surrey, there has not been an outbreak yet.

That number doesn't' surprise Dr. Henry, especially since there are close to 2000 schools in B.C. with millions of kids.

Even if a school has an exposure, unless parents and kids have been reached by public health officials, Dr. Henry says that there isn't a need to be concerned.

"We have had no outbreaks in our school system yet but we are monitoring and health authorities and public health is there for every single school, and we will continue to be there as we move through this pandemic," she said.
