You can spend a day or weekend exploring local shops, digging into food on sun-filled patios, and lounging on the soft-sand shores.

The best part is you don't need access to a car to reach this enchanting summer destination.

VIA Rail offers 1-hour trips from Toronto to the quaint town of Cobourg. According to the town's website, it's one of "Ontario's hidden gems" and offers "boutique shopping, locally inspired dining, vibrant galleries, live theatre, and a stunning white sand beach that stretches along a breathtaking waterfront."

During the summer, the beautiful beach is the place to be. The long ribbon of sand offers gorgeous views of the surrounding lake and is dotted with retro lifeguard stations. You can relax on the shoreline or wander along the winding boardwalk for a dreamy warm-weather experience.

In addition to a scenic beach, Cobourg boasts a cute downtown with over 250 small businesses and vendors. From independent bookstores to artisanal markets, there's something for everyone.

There are several attractions to check out, including 19th-century Victoria Hall, the Art Gallery of Northumberland and the Cobourg & Area Museum.

If you're looking for more things to do outdoors, Victoria Park is a beautiful place for a stroll. Or, you can head to the Cobourg Marina to catch a stunning sunset.

On Saturdays, you can visit the Cobourg Farmers Market, where you can shop for a range of farm-fresh produce.
