A Canadian Soldier Was Shot & Killed During A 'Live Fire Training Exercise' In Alberta

The Department of National Defence has confirmed that a Canadian soldier was killed during a training exercise in Alberta.

In a statement shared on October 31, the department said that “a Canadian Army soldier has died as the result of a gunshot wound.”

The individual was “participating in a live fire training exercise” on October 30, when they were shot at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, in Alberta.

Though the person was immediately treated at the scene and taken to hospital, they succumbed to their injuries in the early hours of October 31.

An investigation into exactly what happened is ongoing.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of our fallen soldier," reads part of the official statement.

"The Canadian Armed Forces will be there to support the family during this difficult time."

This was a message reiterated by the prime minister, who added "Know that we are mourning with you and are here to support you during this difficult time."

The Department of National Defence confirmed that the identity of the deceased is being withheld at this time, but said the next of kin have been notified.
