Are you planning a city break in 2024? A new ranking has determined the best cities in the world to visit this year, with buzzing neighbourhoods, affordable eats and tons of things to do.

Two Canadian cities have been ranked among the 50 best to visit in 2024, but despite its abundance of activities, cool neighbourhoods and attractions, Toronto didn't make the list.

Based on the opinion of local city-dwellers and worldly travellers, you may want to add these Canadian destinations to your travel bucket list.

The ranking was compiled by TimeOut, which surveyed thousands of locals and well-travelled staff writers and editors for their take on which cities around the globe are exciting places to visit right now.

Only two Canadian cities made the cut.

Montreal was listed in spot number 29 out of 50 cities as one of the best urban destinations in 2024, thanks in part to its "old school European architecture" and "cutting edge cocktail scene."

"Come for the friendly, open atmosphere, and stay for the winter party. With an illuminated giant ferris wheel, evening disco skating nights and free museum visits, you can't go wrong," says TimeOut.

According to the ranking, now is a great time to visit the city thanks to Montreal's wintry events, like Igloofest, a music festival running until February 10, 2024, and the city's free interactive light installations, like Luminothérapie, which has transformed the Quartier des spectacles into a playground of art and colour that can be enjoyed until March 10, 2024.

The only other Canadian city to make the list was Vancouver, which came in at spot number 50.

The city was named one of the best in the world thanks to its festivals and events, like the Celebration of Lights, a signature summer event in the city that sees the skies light up with spectacular fireworks displays, and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

The city was also recognized for its food scene. "Year-round, Vancouver is – outside of Japan – the unofficial sushi capital of the world, and boasts an exciting contemporary foodie scene with nine one-Michelin-starred restaurants," says TimeOut.

Best cities in the world for 2024

According to TimeOut, the best city to visit in 2024 is New York, thanks to constant buzz and many things to do and see — it is "the city that never sleeps," after all!

Following NYC was Cape Town, South Africa, where it's hard not to be entranced by the city's natural beauty, and Berlin, Germany, which has a reputation as the "European capital of cool."
