If you’ve woken up feeling a little grumpy today, you’re probably not the only one. It’s Blue Monday in Canada, which means it’s apparently the most miserable day of the year.

For several years, the third Monday in January has been considered as the most depressing day of the whole year.

While the day isn’t officially recognized as the worst, experts suggest it's the one day that Canadians feel at their collective lowest.

There’s a number of reasons why this particular Monday could be perceived as extra-sucky.

Winter is in full swing, it’s pretty dark and cold, our New Year’s motivation has slumped and the bills from the holidays may be starting to roll in.

It’s especially tough this year too, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the good news is that Blue Monday isn’t actually real. According to CNN, the term was originally created by a U.K. travel company to encourage people to book a vacation at this time of year.

While today may not be officially recognized as the worst, it can still feel pretty real.

Some experts suggest taking time out to exercise, chat with friends, take a long bath or enjoy all of your favourite snacks today. You deserve it!

If you or anyone you know is struggling with depression or mental health concerns, please reach out to a trusted peer, parent or health care professional. You can also contact a helpline which is available 24 hours a day to talk. Or click here, for additional resources.

If you need immediate assistance please call 9-1-1 or go to your nearest hospital. Support is available.
