There are some truly unique restaurants in Calgary that take dining experiences to a whole new level. The latest to add to that list is a mountain-style lodge that feels like an après ski spot in the city.

Located in West Hillhurst, The Lodge took over a huge space that was the Legion Branch No. 264. The new owners decided to transform it into a cosy lodge where guests can settle in next to the fire with drinks and comfort food.

Step inside and you find yourself in a spacious room with lofty ceilings, lots of warm wood, and chandeliers made from antlers. A massive fireplace sits in front of big cushioned booths.

The decor makes you feel as though you’ve been whisked away to Banff — think paintings of woodland scenes, a moose head mounted on the wall, and vintage photos of skiers. There's also a giant tapestry picturing a wilderness scene that came from the Saskatoon Museum of Natural Sciences.

You can grab a seat at the bar with its cushy leather chairs, slide into one of the booths, or snag a seat at a four-top table. The TVs above the bar and around the dining room are perfect for catching sports games. They also have a shuffleboard table.

The cocktail menu features classics like the Smoked Old Fashioned and Lodge Caesar. During Après hours (Monday to Friday 3:18 pm to 5:48 pm and 8:48 pm to close, and all day Sundays) you can get discounted prices on select drinks and snacks.

The food is easy-going and comforting, just like you would expect at a mountain lodge. Think truffle parmesan fries, beer cheese fondue and herb roasted chicken with mashed potatoes. There are several options for vegetarians too like the grain bowl and veggie burger.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, try the s’more cookie skillet or the sticky toffee pudding. Both come drizzled with bourbon caramel.

The Lodge also does brunch on weekends from 11am to 3pm. The menu is small, but there are some seriously enticing options like the avocado benny with tomato jam and the breakfast poutine that features fries topped with cheese curds and bacon, then smothered in hollandaise sauce.

The cosy atmosphere gives off holiday vibes, making this a great spot for a Christmas party or a festive gathering. Although they don’t have a private room, the space is huge, so they can accommodate large groups. There’s even a play area for kids.

If you’re craving a mountain escape, but don’t have time to drive up to Banff, The Lodge is a good substitute. It offers fun ski resort vibes in an inviting and very Instagrammable setting.

Address: 1918 Kensington Rd NW, Calgary, AB

Why You Need to Go: This cosy ski lodge setting will give you all the holiday feels. The food is comforting and hearty and the drinks are on point. Plus, it's got plenty of space to host a party or a group event. It's like having a mountain cabin right in the city.
