This small town in Alberta was shouted out as a must-visit spot instead of Banff
Escape the city and the crowds!

A small town in Alberta locals love.
There is a beautiful little town in Alberta, sitting alongside a scenic lake and nestled among towering mountains. Beyond the charming small-town streets are open fields that melt into canyons, waterfalls tucked away along hiking trails, and jagged peaks all around.
There's a little bit of everything here, making it a perfect summer destination. That's what helped this spot get shouted out on a Narcity poll, dubbed as one of the best places to go instead of Banff.
While Banff is stunning and a perfect blend of bustling and peaceful nature, it can get busy and pricey. Luckily, there are some more low-key hidden gems in the province that make for a more relaxed trip, but don't compromise when it comes to beauty and adventure.
One of those places is Waterton, a small village within Waterton Lakes National Park. It's about three hours away from Calgary, so it's a bit of a drive, but you're rewarded with breathtaking views and unbelievable wilderness to explore.
The small village in the park is quaint, but it has everything you need. There are local shops, restaurants, accommodations, and tours in town. While it offers a bit of everything, it's not too crowded and manages to feel like a hidden gem.
Near the town area is the Prince of Wales Hotel, a landmark of Waterton, perched on a hillside overlooking the lake.
Exploring the park beyond town, you'll find lots of adventure. Red Rock Canyon is an easy hike that takes you into a colourful canyon, with clear water running through it.
You can take your pick of activities, from horseback riding at Alpine Stables to kayaking adventures.
Camping in the park is a go-to, since it's a Dark Sky Preserve. You're far from the city lights here, so you can enjoy the night sky in all its glory.
If you want a trip away from the hustle and bustle, Waterton is the spot to go.
