This government benefit is giving additional payments of $150 to some Canadians soon

Some individuals may receive an additional amount from one of the government payments administered by Service Canada.
This federal benefit will include new supplemental payments of $150 starting in September.
With the Canada Disability Benefit, the federal government provides direct financial support to people aged 18 to 64 with disabilities.
One of the eligibility requirements for the Canada Disability Benefit is an approved Disability Tax Credit certificate.
The Disability Tax Credit helps reduce the income tax that people with impairments or their supporting family members have to pay.
Applying for the credit is a two-part process that involves you filling out the application and a medical practitioner certifying the effects of your impairment.
You can apply for the Disability Tax Credit at any time by phone and online using the digital form, or by mail using the paper form.
Starting in fall 2026, you may also receive a supplemental payment from Service Canada to help offset the cost of obtaining the Disability Tax Credit.
The supplemental amount is fixed at $150, regardless of how much money you receive from the Canada Disability Benefit, and it's issued as a lump sum.
You may be eligible to receive this new supplemental payment for each approved Disability Tax Credit certificate you obtain that qualifies you for a monthly Canada Disability Benefit payment.
If you received a Canada Disability Benefit payment before September 2026 but won't receive payments after that, you're still eligible for the supplemental amount. That includes anyone who received their total benefit amount for the year as a lump sum.
The supplemental payment won't be issued for individuals who died before September 2026.
Even though you have to apply for the Disability Tax Credit and the Canada Disability Benefit, you don't need to apply for this new supplemental payment.
Canada Disability Benefit payments are issued on the third Thursday of each month, and the maximum monthly amount is $204.20.
So, if you apply for the disability tax credit and receive the supplemental payment along with the maximum Canada Disability Benefit amount, you can get $354.20!
If your total amount for the 2026-27 benefit year is $240 or less (which works out to $20 or less per month), you receive a single lump sum payment from Service Canada instead of monthly payments.
You can still get the supplemental payment to cover the cost of obtaining the disability tax credit even if your total benefit amount is paid out as a lump sum.
