Looking for work right after graduation can be hard enough, but when the job market is also being affected by something bigger (as is the case in 2020), it can feel almost impossible. Luckily, Canada's government has jobs in office administration for recent grads. These positions pay well and they are constantly being filled.

These jobs as the "office go-to" are available across the country and are designed for people who have completed their post-secondary education.

They come with a "flexible work environment" and "excellent benefits," as well as a salary that can range anywhere from $51,538 to $72,660.

What jobs are available?

The Public Service Commission is working on behalf of various branches within the government to fill a variety of administration jobs through the post-secondary recruitment program.

Many of these are assistant positions in departments like human resources or legal, but there are also jobs like program or event coordinators, contracts officer, and property management coordinator.

No matter what position you end up applying for, you can expect duties such as managing and distributing information in the office, drafting and sending correspondence, or coordinating travel arrangements.

This first step can also lead to a more permanent career in administrative public service.

Who can apply?

These positions are available to graduates with a university degree in any subject.

Those with a college diploma in an applicable field of study can also qualify. These include any type of business administration, communications and media studies, accounting, or legal assistance.

You'll also need to have some administrative experience, which can include scheduling and organizing meetings, data entry, or taking minutes.

This can be shown through previous jobs or volunteer positions, but can also be demonstrated through the work you did while attending school.

You should also have experience providing service to people by telephone, in writing, or in person. If you've worked in retail, you have this covered.

Are there other requirements?

Through the application process, you will be required to take the Unsupervised Internet Test of Cognitive Ability (level 1).

This assessment is made up of 20 multiple choice questions, and you are given 60 minutes to complete it.

The test is designed to evaluate your problem-solving skills and ability to reason. It features questions involving numerical series, workplace math, and finding similarities.

If you continue further in the application process, you may also be asked to complete the General Competency Test Level 2.

An optional assessment of your written second-language skills can be taken if you want to apply to a position that is bilingual.
