Canada's First-Ever Coloured Loonie Just Came Out & It's So Pretty

The new coin is already in circulation.

So beautiful! Canada's new loonie just dropped and it's the country's first-ever coloured $1 coin.

This new piece of change commemorates the 75th anniversary of the creation of the United Nations which happened after 51 nations, including Canada, signed the charter.

It features the UN's signature olive branch wreath in blue and Canada's iconic red maple leaf along with a world map that has more maple leaves within it.

Two million of these beautiful blue and red coloured coins went into circulation on October 22.

The Royal Canadian Mint said that this is a tribute to Canada's commitment to continuing international cooperation through the United Nations.

In 1945, a treaty was signed by nations all over the world to create this new world body with the goals of saving future generations from war, championing human rights, encouraging respect for international law and treaties, and promoting social progress.

The Mint has also created one million uncoloured versions of the commemorative coin.*

While this is the first time the loonie has a pop of colour, toonies have been vibrant before like one that commemorates the end of World War II and one that's in honour of a Haida artist.
