The following morning, a border officer saw a kayak on the shore and found that the man had set up a campsite just south of the border.

When the officer got close, Plante grabbed a rifle and bolted into the woods. The two engaged in an 8-kilometre chase before he was caught and arrested.

He is now facing a criminal complaint of entering the U.S. illegally as well as possession of a firearm and ammunition. He's awaiting his next court date in Montana.
