The most important news of the year just dropped. Alberta's favourite dogs were just named and after crunching the numbers, it turns out that people in Calgary and Edmonton really dig their tiny dogs. Surprisingly, Alberta more attached to those adorable miniature dogs than the rest of Canada.

Rover.com took on the task of surveying people in 10 big cities across Canada, to figure out the types of doggos that people crave. Now, according to city-specific data they shared with Narcity, we're able to list local favourites from Alberta's biggest cities.

Here is the top ten list for Edmonton:

  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. Mixed
  3. German Shepherd Dog
  4. Shih Tzu
  5. Golden Retriever
  6. Chihuahua
  7. Pomeranian
  8. Yorkshire Terrier
  9. Labradoodle
  10. Border Collie

Say what you will about the hockey rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton, but both cities love a good labrador retriever.

These are the favourites for Calgary:

  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. Mixed
  3. Golden Retriever
  4. Shih Tzu
  5. Yorkshire Terrier
  6. Chihuahua
  7. Labradoodle
  8. Goldendoodle
  9. German Shepherd Dog
  10. Boxer

The two cities also have their own local favourites that didn't make the Canadian top 20.

For Calgary, these include the bichon (12), maltese (14), cavalier king charles spaniel (16), miniature schnauzer (17) and havanese (18) — all of whom are notoriously tiny and so very adorable.

Edmonton is more generic, matching with the nation's favourites.

For Canada overall, the top three breeds belong to mixed mutts, labrador retrievers, and golden retrievers, from first place to third.

"As we’ve seen since the start of the pandemic, Canadians are adding to their pack by opening up their homes to new dogs," said veterinarian Rebecca Greenstein in Rover.com's press release.

However, over the course of the pandemic, many shelters had filled up with animals after people started abandoning their pets. So many doggos are still in need of homes.

But even though people say they have favourites, there's only one, undeniable truth out there: they're all good dogs.

Alberta is full of incredible trails that you can take them on to satisfy their sense of adventure and if you don't have a four-legged best friend yet, then what are you waiting for?
