The Royal Canadian Mint has released a new coin of the "Reaper of Death" dinosaur that honours it as the first new tyrannosaur species discovered in Canada in more than 50 years.

On one side of the coin, the creature's fossilized skull is featured in all its ferocious glory on top of black rhodium plating, which makes it stand out.

On the black rhodium plating, there's an engraved rock texture to represent where the fossil fragments were found.

The special dinosaur coin was designed by Canadian paleoartist Julius Csotonyi and it's being sold for $109.95 by the Mint.

Since it's not going into circulation, only 7,500 will ever be made.

Thanatotheristes degrootorum was unveiled in 2020 and the first part of that name means "Reaper of Death," while the second is in honour of the De Groot family who discovered the dinosaur fossils.

It is about 79.5 million years old and is a relative of the T. rex.

A lot of dinosaurs have been discovered in Canada in the last few years, including the biggest T. rex in the world.

This new Canadian coin is like a black loonie but it's worth much more than $1

It has black rhodium plating and high-contrast frostings.
