New $2 Coin In Canada Is So Colourful & Launches This Week

Canada Is Getting A Colourful New $2 Coin & It Could Be ...

Managing Editor, Canada

Check your change this week, people! The Royal Canadian Mint has issued a brand new $2 coin in Canada and there are millions of super colourful versions up for grabs.

Launched on July 13, the new toonie celebrates 100 years since a "Canadian medical breakthrough that changed the world forever."

It pays tribute to the four researchers who collaborated to discover insulin in Canada, way back in 1921.

This is marked by the toonie's design, which features scientific instruments, a maple leaf, blood cells and insulin molecules. The word "insulin" and the years "1921" and "2021" are also included.

There are two versions of the coin that will be circulated as of Tuesday — a coloured and uncoloured version.

You're more likely to come across the colourful one, as two million have already started circulating across the country. One million uncoloured toonies have also been released.

Banks and businesses will also begin introducing the new $2 gradually, so you can expect to have one in your pocket very soon!
