When it comes to a COVID-19 vaccine, Canada has now approved its first one and a Health Canada official joked that we did it before the U.S. because we're better.

Following the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine getting the green light from Health Canada, officials held a press conference to talk about the groundbreaking news.

Dr. Supriya Sharma, a senior medical advisor with Health Canada, had the perfect response to being asked how we "beat" the U.S. to approve the shot first.

We're just better.

Dr. Supriya Sharma

While Dr. Sharma joked that "we're just better," she went on to explain that Health Canada isn't in a race with other regulators.

She noted that the goal is to beat the virus, not other countries, and said it's possible that information is submitted to different countries at different times.

"It just so happened we got the last piece of information late last night," she added.

Dr. Sharma also said there's no information that U.S. regulators are looking at that Health Canada hasn't seen already and included in its review.

The same day that the country approved its first COVID-19 vaccine, an Amnesty International report accused Canada of having so many doses that it's actually hurting other countries.
