Calling all Ford owners! Two new Ford recalls in Canada will affect over 275,000 vehicles with issues are related to airbags and tires.

On March 12, the motor company confirmed that almost 2.6 million Ford vehicles in North America were being recalled due to problematic airbags and tires.

Problematic Airbags

One of the recalls involves Takata driver's side front airbags for 2006-12 Ford Fusion, 2007-10 Ford Edge, 2007-11 Ford Ranger, 2006-11 Mercury Milan, 2006-12 Lincoln Zephyr/MKZ and 2007-10 Lincoln MKX vehicles.

As many as 274,737 cars in Canada are believed to be impacted.

The airbags contain a calcium sulfate desiccant which could degrade after long periods of exposure to high humidity and temperatures.

This could lead to a rupture during airbag deployment, which Ford says “could result in serious injury or death.”

Despite this, the company says it is "not aware of any reports of a rupture of an airbag with calcium sulfate desiccant."

What about the tires?

The company has issued a safety recall related to tires, too.

“Certain tires supplied to Ford and other auto manufacturers may have cured beyond specification,” explains the statement.

This means affected tires could experience sudden air loss or tread loss, which may “increase the risk of a crash.”

However, Ford says it is not aware of any reports of accidents or injury related to this issue.

Around 3,082 vehicles in Canada are believed to be impacted by this problem.

What will happen?

Ford confirmed that dealers will replace problematic airbags by changing the driver’s side front airbag inflator or airbag module in eligible vehicles.

Owner notifications are expected to begin as of April 1, 2021.

Those with faulty tires will be able to have them replaced by Ford dealers too, with owner notifications expected to start on March 29, 2021.
