Canada has become the latest country to issue a temporary travel ban with the United Kingdom, after a new strain of COVID-19 was discovered in the country.

On December 20, the federal government confirmed the ban in a statement. Officials confirmed they are “closely monitoring” news of the new strain.

In a tweet, Justin Trudeau confirmed that all flights from the U.K. will be prohibited from entering Canada.

This is in addition to existing travel restrictions on international visitors.

“Passengers who arrived today are subject to secondary screening and enhanced measures,” the PM added.

Canada joins countries like Ireland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Italy, which have all blocked flights from Britain.

Many of these bans are for 48 hours or longer.

While there is no suggestion that the recently-discovered version is any more deadly, officials believe it is responsible for extremely significant spikes in U.K. COVID-19 cases over the last week or so.
