The federal government has issued a reminder to Canadians that the Canada-U.S. border is closed, even for Black Friday shopping.

In a social media post shared this week, the government’s official travel-related account urged shoppers to stay on their side of the border ahead of the weekend.

Sharing a link to Canada’s travel advisory page, they reminded bargain-hunters that “non-essential” trips to the United States are prohibited right now.

Their reminder comes around one week after it was announced travel restrictions between the U.S. and Canada would be extended once again.

Non-essential travel between the two countries has been prohibited since March, with the border closure extended eight different times.

Despite these restrictions, a considerable number of Americans have crossed over into Canada for purposes considered discretionary.

In October, the Canada Border Services Agency told Naricty that 6,398 U.S. citizens had tried to enter Canada for tourism purposes since March.

Another 2,369 people were stopped for trying to take recreational trips, while 583 tried to cross the border for non-essential shopping.

With so many Black Friday deals available online, it could be best to enjoy it from the comfort of your couch, eh?
