With 2023 coming to a close, it's time for New Year's Day which marks the start of another year — 2024.

You might be wondering what grocery stores, malls, restaurants, attractions, and more are open and closed in Ontario if you already have things on your to-do list at the start of the year.

New Year's Day is on January 1 which is a Monday in 2024.

It's a stat holiday in Ontario so most people have the day off work and a lot of places across the province are closed.

However, there are still a bunch of spots open whether you want to get groceries, shop at a mall, eat at a restaurant, visit a museum, go skating or do something else.

So, here are places — including grocery stores, restaurants, malls, and more — that are open and closed on New Year's Day in Ontario.

Grocery stores

Costco: Costco locations in Ontario are closed on New Year's Day.

Walmart: Closed on January 1, 2024.

Metro: Metro grocery stores in Ontario are closed.

Food Basics: All stores closed on New Year's Day.

Loblaws: Most locations are closed but some Loblaws grocery stores are open on New Year's Day, including:

  • 363 Rideau St., Ottawa
  • 12 Hurontario St., Collingwood
  • 400 Kent St. W., Lindsay
  • 200 Bullock Dr., Markham
  • 301 High Tech Rd., Richmond Hill
  • 60 Carlton St., Toronto

Longo's: All locations are closed on January 1.

Rabba: All of the Rabba locations in the Greater Toronto Area are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That includes New Year's Day.

Liquor stores

LCBO: Locations are closed on New Year's Day.

The Beer Store: Closed.

Wine Rack: Wine Rack locations in the Toronto area are open on New Year's Day.

Only some stores in other parts of the province are open on January 1, 2024.

Restaurants

Terroni: This restaurant in Toronto on Adelaide Street is open on New Year's Day.

Stock Bar: Stock Bar in Toronto is accepting reservations for January 1, 2024.

The Albion Rooms: The Albion Rooms in Ottawa is open on New Year's Day for all-day Hangover Brunch.

ONE Restaurant: This Toronto restaurant is open.

LOUIX LOUIS: This restaurant in The St. Regis Toronto is open on New Year's Day. Plus, the restaurant's Royal Brunch is also available.

The Keg Steakhouse + Bar: The Keg's Ajax location is accepting reservations for January 1, 2024.

Zoe's at Fairmont Chateau Laurier: Zoe's, which is located in the Fairmont Château Laurier in Ottawa, is open on New Year's Day.

Isabelle Restaurant + Lounge: This restaurant in Burlington is open.

Gyu-Kaku: You can make a reservation for New Year's Day at Gyu-Kaku in Mississauga.

The Keg Steakhouse + Bar: New Year's Day seatings are available at The Keg in Brampton.

Big Rig Kitchen & Brewery: This restaurant in Richmond Hill is open.

Cocotte Bistro: This spot in Ottawa is open for New Year's Day brunch.

El Catrin: El Catrin, which is located in Toronto's Distillery District, is open on New Year's Day.

Transit

TTC: Sunday service is operated on New Year's Day. That means TTC routes are running based on their Sunday schedules even though January 1 is a Monday.

Also, the subway service starts around 8 a.m. on New Year's Day and runs every four to five minutes.

GO Transit: GO Transit is on a Saturday schedule for New Year's Day. So, trains are running according to the Saturday schedule for each route.

However, some GO Transit routes don't have weekend service so you need to check a route's specific schedule for information about weekend service.

Malls and shopping centres

Eaton Centre: Toronto Eaton Centre is open on New Year's Day from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Yorkdale: Closed on January 1, 2024.

Sherway Gardens: Closed.

Rideau Centre: This mall in Ottawa is closed on New Year's Day.

Square One: Mississauga's Square One is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on January 1, 2024.

Bramalea City Centre: You can shop at this mall in Brampton from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. However, store openings on stat holidays are voluntary so some stores might not be open.

Vaughan Mills: Modified hours.

Toronto Premium Outlets: This shopping center is open from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. on New Year's Day.

Outlet Collection at Niagara: Open on January 1, 2024, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Services

Canada Post: Canada Post is closed on national and provincial holidays. That means there is no mail collection or delivery on New Year's Day.

Banks: Banks are closed on New Year's Day.

However, you can still access your bank accounts, pay bills, move money around and more with online banking. Also, you can withdraw cash from ATMs.

Service Canada: Locations in Ontario are closed on January 1, 2024.

ServiceOntario: Closed on New Year's Day.

Some ServiceOntario services are online so you can still renew your driver's license, renew your license plates, renew your health card, and more even when locations are closed.

Things to do

ROM: This museum in Toronto is open on New Year's Day from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Canada's Wonderland: You can go to WinterFest at Canada's Wonderland from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. on January 1, 2024.

National Art Gallery of Canada: This art gallery in Ottawa is open between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The Distillery District: Restaurants, cafés, and retailers in Toronto's Distillery District are open from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on New Year's Day.

The Distillery Winter Village seasonal vendor cabins are closed.

Casa Loma: Open for Christmas At The Castle from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Casa Loma Holiday Lights from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Journey Behind The Falls: This Niagara Falls attraction is open between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Cineplex: Cineplex theatres are open on New Year's Day.

Nathan Phillips Square skating rink: You can go skating at Nathan Phillips Square between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. on January 1, 2024, because the rink is open for drop-in leisure skating.

Art Gallery of Ontario: Open from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

CN Tower: You can visit the CN Tower between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on New Year's Day.

Rouge National Urban Park: This national park in Toronto is open 365 days a year.
