Hamilton Issued Dozens Of Tickets To People Breaking Rules At Waterfalls Last Week

Residents are being reminded not to hike up the falls.

The arrival of warm weather had crowds flooding to visit Hamilton waterfalls last week, which resulted in multiple charges being laid.

According to the city, 58 tickets were handed out to residents for ignoring the rules at waterfalls.

"There was lots of enforcement, and it was a split, a lot of the enforcement was actually unrelated to the COVID-19 regulations, but lots of things happening around our falls areas," Paul Johnson, director of Hamilton's emergency operations centre, said during a press conference on Monday.

With a lot of the charges being non-COVID-19 related, Johnson is reminding residents to stay on designated trails and not hike up the falls.

"Even when we are all able to declare this pandemic behind us, it will still be illegal to hike up Albion Falls and Chedoke Falls. We had a number of penalties applied over the last week over these areas," he added.

The City of Hamilton previously granted city bylaw officers the power to ticket anyone visiting local waterfalls and hiking trails who aren't following COVID-19 rules back in April.
