Sweltering heat and raging wildfires caused a massive California fire tornado over the weekend.

On August 15, the National Weather Service (NWS) Reno warned people of "tornadic activity" in the Loyalton fire area

The Loyalton fire, which has burned 34,295 acres so far, showed dangerous behavior on Saturday that led to a fire swirl to develop. 

According to Smithsonian Magazine, these 'nados form from high temps and hot air rising, creating a superheated column of air, bringing ash and flames with it.
