Summer is nearly here, and Canadians are planning their big summer vacations. However, instead of jetting off to far away places, it turns out that many Canucks are opting to stay closer to home.
A new report has detailed the top places Canadians are looking to visit this summer, and an Ontario region has been singled out as the most popular spot in the country.
On Wednesday, Deloitte Canada released its first-ever Summer Travel Outlook, detailing how Canadians will be travelling this summer.
According to the report, while Canadians are eagerly making travel plans and are ready to make up for missed travel time, three in four (74%) are planning to stay in the True North and "experience the very best it has to offer."
One region in particular was mentioned in the report as being the most popular destination in the country this summer, as well as the most popular summer travel spot for Ontarians.
According to Deloitte, Northern Ontario is the most popular summer destination in Canada, and a top spot for Ontario travellers, with the company noting that the region is "as popular a destination as Toronto."
For those looking to visit, northern Ontario is brimming with opportunities for outdoor adventures, home to iconic hiking trails, stunning provincial parks and breathtaking natural wonders.
One top activity is the Cup and Saucer Trail, a 2-hour, 14-kilometre hike on the world's largest freshwater island (also known as Manitoulin Island) that delivers gorgeous views and is said to be one of the most famous hikes in the province.
As far as must-visit provincial parks in the region go, it doesn't get any more iconic than Lake Superior Provincial Park.
Located in Algoma, the park is home to beautiful swimming spots like Old Woman Bay, Katherine Cove and Bathtub Island, and you'll also find here the Agawa Rock Pictographs, 35 red ochre images that are one of the few pictograph sites in Ontario accessible by foot.
Other top things to do in the region include visiting the "Niagara Falls of the North," also known as Kakabeka Falls, and hiking the iconic "Crack" in Killarney Provincial Park.
