The Kim family has returned to their iconic Toronto storefront to film season five of Kim's Convenience.

Narcity caught up with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, who plays the beloved Mr. Kim or "Appa" on the show, about what fans can look forward to when it premieres.

Between the Chewbacca roars and Star Trek whistle notifications blowing up his phone throughout the call, Lee opened up about how tough it has been to film during the pandemic.

He also told us all about his dreams for the Kim family and the exploring around Toronto that he wants them to do on the show.

Has Kim's Convenience been affected by the pandemic?

The pandemic lockdown led to some challenges for the Kim's Convenience team, Lee said.

"We should've been done [filming] by now. We usually start shooting mid-May and we finish at the end of July. But because of the lockdown, everything got pushed and we didn't know whether we were going to go again."

The cast returned to set just a few weeks ago, and fans snapped some photos of Mr. Kim at his store.

Lee admits that what he misses most is giving the cast and crew big hugs at the end of the day.

"Instead, I'm making eye contact with people, calling their name and bowing to them. It's the closest substitute I can get and it's wholly unsatisfying, but it's better than nothing."

What will happen in season five of Kim's Convenience?

Season five of Kims Convenience will dive into the cliffhangers we were left with last season, said Lee.

"At the end of season four, we found out some very life-changing news about Umma. Janet went off to Tanzania, so we'll continue with the effects of that and what the journey meant to her," he said.

As for Jung, Kimchi, and Shannon, Lee says we're "going to get more answers" about the drama in their lives too.

As to whether or not the Kim's Convenience world will be dealing with a pandemic, Appa was coy. "The Kim family is going to continue on in their ways," he said.

What changes could we see in future seasons of Kim's Convenience?

Lee wants to see the Kims explore Toronto in future seasons of Kim's Convenience.

"I'd love for the Kims to leave the store a little bit more," he said. "To see them go to a baseball game, watch the Jays play, or watch the Raptors or the Leafs play. I think that'd be a lot of fun."

Unlike other shows who disguise Toronto as other cities, Lee says "Toronto is a character unto itself" on Kim's Convenience.

He thinks the Kims should experience the city like locals do, at places like Casa Loma or Koreatown, and "seeing them interact with the community that way too."

Lee also wants Mr. and Mrs. Kim "to go down to the wholesale" someday so that viewers can "see that side of owning a convenience store."
