This dreamy waterfront village is one of Ontario's most underrated vacation spots, locals say

It's full of European charm.

Lead Writer, Travel

Sparkling waters, old-world charm and cozy shops await at this enchanting destination in Ontario. You'll feel like you've stepped into a European village without even leaving the province.

In a post on Narcity Canada's Facebook page, we asked readers to share their most underrated vacation spot in Ontario. This stunning waterside destination was one of the recommended places, and it's a mini slice of summer paradise.

Gananoque is a charming village nestled along the shores of the St. Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands region. It's a three-hour drive from Toronto, making it a convenient spot for a weekend escape.

The old-world village dates back to the 1700s when European settlers first established roots in the area. You can wander past charming stone buildings and heritage sites that will transport you to another land.

The quaint shops and picturesque cafés offer a dreamy, laid-back experience.

Some top things to do in the region include catching a show at the waterfront Thousand Islands Playhouse, checking out the 1000 Islands Museum, wandering through Sculpture Park and taking a scenic cruise around the area.

You can also enjoy a meal at several delightful restaurants, such as Riva, The Old English Pub, and Purple House. For beach lovers, there are local spots like Joel Stone Beach and Grass Creek Park.

Winter brings a quiet, cozy vibe to the area. The quaint streets look especially magical under a blanket of snow, and you can explore frosty trails and warm up with a drink at a cozy cafe.

Some businesses and attractions are seasonal, so be sure to plan ahead.

If you're looking for a getaway spot, locals suggest this charming Ontario gem.
