If you're planning a last-minute summer getaway, this dreamy Ontario destination with bright blue waters and harbour charm might be worth a road trip.

You can spend the last moments of summer wandering along sandy beaches, exploring quaint streets and more at this picturesque spot.

On Narcity Canada's Facebook page, we asked readers to share their most underrated vacation spot in Ontario, and this quaint harbour town was one of the recommended spots.

Penetanguishene is an enchanting community located along the crystal-clear waters of Georgian Bay.

According to Experience Simcoe, it's said to have "one of the most picturesque and protected harbours" and "is a haven for tourists, artists and outdoor enthusiasts."

You can step back in time at Discovery Harbour, a 19th-century British naval and military garrison. The living history park is home to majestic tall ships, as well as reconstructed and original historic buildings, such as workshops, homes, and a stone Officer's Quarters dating back to 1845.

While exploring Discovery Harbour, you can stop by the King's Wharf Theatre, which showcases a range of theatrical performances.

Another must-visit spot is Sainte-Marie among the Hurons — Ontario's first European Community. Here you'll find some of North America's oldest masonry, as well as a reconstructed cookhouse, stables, blacksmith shop, waterway, and more.

Penetanguishene has been dubbed the "Gateway to the 30,000 Islands" and offers an array of stunning scenery. You can enjoy boat cruises around he scenic landscapes, as well as picturesque trails and more.

The region is home to several dreamy beaches, such as Rotary Champlain Wendat Beach, where you can take a dip in the shimmering waters.

Awenda Provincial Park, located only 10 minutes from Penetanguishene, is a majestic place to explore and boasts a number of stunning natural beaches, with Methodist Point Bay being the sandiest.

According to Bruce Grey Simcoe, the beaches of Georgian Bay feature "Caribbean-blue water," so you can expect some picture-perfect views and swimming opportunities in the park.

Awenda also offers beautiful hiking trails, such as the Robitaille Homestead Trail, which leads past an ancient dune system.

Penetanguishene's historic downtown boasts cozy shops and eateries with lake views.

You can spend an afternoon strolling along the sun-filled streets, popping into shops and wandering along the waterfront.

With a historic downtown, stunning landscapes and vibrant blue waters, Penetanguishene is an underrated spot for a summer escape.
