June has finally landed, and with it comes another round of government benefits for Ontario residents.

If you're living in Ontario and feeling the weight of your monthly bills, you might be in for some financial relief thanks to the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB).

This monthly government payment is designed to help lower- and middle-income households handle things like rent and property taxes, energy costs and sales tax. While it's funded by the Ontario government, the payment is handled by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

Depending on your income, where you live and your family situation, the OTB could bring a solid amount your way in June. And if you opted to receive your annual benefit in one single payment rather than monthly, you could even be looking at a cheque for thousands of dollars this month.

Here's what to know about the Ontario Trillium Benefit for June 2025 — including OTB payment dates, eligibility details and how much you can get.

What is the OTB?

The Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) is a monthly tax-free payment aimed at supporting eligible Ontarians with the cost of living in the province. It's meant to help offset expenses such as energy use, property taxes and the sales tax you pay on everyday purchases.

Although the benefit is funded by the Government of Ontario, it's issued by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), which handles the actual payments.

The OTB rolls three different credits into one deposit: the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit, the Ontario Sales Tax Credit and the Northern Ontario Energy Credit. If you're approved for any of these credits, you'll automatically receive the OTB.

Who qualifies for the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

The June 2025 OTB payment is the final instalment calculated based on your 2023 tax return. To receive it, you must have filed your 2023 taxes and met the eligibility requirements — even if you had no income that year. The CRA uses that return to figure out whether you qualify and how much you can get.

To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old, or have a spouse, common-law partner or child who lives — or previously lived — with you. For the Ontario Sales Tax Credit part, you must be 19 or older.

The other two credits that make up the OTB have additional criteria:

  • Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit: Available to those who pay rent or property taxes, cover energy costs on a reserve or live in a public long-term care facility.
  • Northern Ontario Energy Credit: Reserved for residents of the northern districts of Algoma, Cochrane, Kenora, Manitoulin, Nipissing, Parry Sound, Rainy River, Sudbury, Thunder Bay and Timiskaming.

If you have a spouse or common-law partner, you both must have filed 2023 tax returns — your benefit is based on combined income.

How much is the Ontario Trillium Benefit?

The OTB is made up of three separate credits, and the amount you receive depends on your individual circumstances — things like your income, age, rent or property tax payments and where you live in Ontario all factor into the total.

Each credit has its own maximum payout. Here's what you could get for the full current benefit year:

  • OSTC: Up to $360 each for you, your spouse and any dependent children.
  • OEPTC: Up to $1,248 if you're between 18 and 64, or up to $1,421 if you're 65 or older. There's also a $277 supplement for people living on a reserve or in a public long-term care home, and an extra $25 if you lived in a school residence in 2023.
  • NOEC: Up to $180 for individuals, or up to $277 for families.

Once your total entitlement is calculated, the CRA divides it into 12 monthly payments, unless your total benefit is $360 or less — in which case you would have already received a one-time lump sum back in July 2024 — or you opted to receive your full benefit in one payment — in which case you'll get the full annual amount as your June OTB payment next week.

How to apply for the Ontario Trillium Benefit

To receive the OTB in June 2025, you need to have filed your 2023 income tax return — and if you haven't done that yet, there's still time. Your eligibility is based entirely on that return, and the steps you need to take vary depending on which of the three credits you're applying for.

For the Ontario Sales Tax Credit, no extra forms are required. The CRA will automatically assess your eligibility when reviewing your tax return. If you're part of a couple, this credit is usually paid to the person whose return is processed first — unless one of you is 64 or older, in which case it typically goes to the older partner.

To be considered for the Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit and/or the Northern Ontario Energy Credit, you'll need to complete Form ON-BEN when filing your return. Only one person in a couple needs to submit the form — generally the older spouse if one is a senior. Most digital tax software includes this step, so you'll likely be prompted to fill it out during the filing process.

Once you're approved, the CRA will issue a notice confirming how much you're eligible to receive. To continue receiving OTB payments in future years, just make sure to file your taxes annually.

Is the Ontario Trillium Benefit taxable?

No, the Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) is not taxable. It's designed to return some of the money you've already paid through taxes — not add to what you owe.

You don't need to include OTB payments as income on your tax return, and they won't affect your refund or your tax balance in any way.

When is the Ontario Trillium Benefit paid?

The next Ontario Trillium Benefit (OTB) payment is coming up next week on Tuesday, June 10. Payments usually arrive on the 10th of each month — but if that date falls on a weekend or holiday, the deposit is made on the previous business day.

Here's the full schedule for the other remaining OTB payment dates in 2025:

  • Thursday, July 10
  • Friday, August 8
  • Wednesday, September 10
  • Friday, October 10
  • Monday, November 10
  • Wednesday, December 10

Don't forget — not everyone receives monthly payments. If your total OTB amount for the benefit year was $360 or less, the CRA would have issued your payment as a one-time lump sum back in July 2024.
