The Oscar Nominations Are Out & Here's Everything You Need To Know

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra finally revealed the 2021 Oscar nominations Monday morning, and the award ceremony is shaping up to be historic.

2020 was a strange year for movies, as Oscar-nominated films received very little box office money due to theaters across the nation being closed throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, but many still shined on streaming platforms.

Streaming Services Are The Big Winners

With everyone stuck at home due to the pandemic, streaming services became the primary source of entertainment for movie lovers.

Netflix films received a whopping 35 total nominations, with The Trial of The Chicago 7 being nominated for Best Picture alongside Mank, which leads the Oscar field with 10 nominations.

Hulu's Nomadland, Amazon's Sound of Metal, and HBO's Judas and the Black Messia also received nominations for Best Picture.

The year of diversity?

The 2021 Oscar nominations feature a handful of firsts, as this year's ceremony marks the first time an all-Black production crew was nominated for Best Picture with Judas and the Black Messiah.

The award show also sees two women nominated for Best Director for the first time in history with Nomadland director Chloé Zhao and Promising Young Woman's Emerald Fennell.

Two actors of Asian descent have been nominated for Best Actor for the first time with Minari's Steven Yeun and Sound of Metal's Riz Ahmed.

Viola Davis became the most nominated Black actress of all time after receiving her fourth nomination for her role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Davis is also the first Black actress to be nominated for Best Actress twice in her career.

Chadwick Boseman's Final Role

The world lost Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman in August 2020 due to an ongoing fight with cancer, but his final film was still released four months later on Netflix

His role in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor and also won him the Golden Globe for the same category earlier in 2021.
