Canada's PM Swearing-In Ceremony Is So Low Key Compared To Biden's Inauguration

There's no entertainment at the Canadian version!🇨🇦🇺🇸
Managing Editor, Canada

While it was certainly a little more empty than usual, Joe Biden’s inauguration is bound to be one to remember.

It included star-studded performances, top-class entertainment and moving poetry, among other things.

While the whole ceremony is pretty impressive, it’s quite different than what Canada is used to.

If you were wondering what the main differences between the two proceedings are, here’s everything you need to know:

What is an inauguration?

On its most basic level, Inauguration Day is an American legal procedure that usually occurs on the January 20 that follows a U.S. presidential election (unless it’s a Sunday, in which case the date becomes January 21).

It’s the day the president-elect officially takes office in the White House.

In some cases, it’s also the same day the former president leaves.

Most of the events of the day are focused on traditions. This includes a worship service, swearing-in ceremonies and the Inaugural Address.

The Inaugural Address is the speech given by the new leader that lays-out their goals and aims for the future, both for the country and in terms of their presidency.

What happened during Biden's inauguration?

Since the first-ever American Inauguration Day, the day’s events have changed quite a lot.

Now, as well as the traditional aspects, the proceedings include theatrical elements, celebrity performances and high-profile entertainment for those watching.

For the inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, performers like Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Garth Brooks took to the stage.

While around 200,000 people are usually in attendance at the Capitol building, there were far fewer in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, only around 1,000 attendees were allowed to experience the event in person.

Later on, a TV special called Celebrating America is set to be aired with a mega-celebrity line-up, hosted by Tom Hanks.

Famous faces will include people like Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake, Ant Clemons and Jon Bon Jovi, among others.

How does it compare to Canada's version?

Compared to Inauguration Day, Canada’s Swearing-In Ceremony is pretty low-key!

When a new prime minister has been chosen, the Canadian governor general presides over the Swearing-In Ceremony.

This takes place in the Ballroom at Rideau Hall and includes the swearing-in of all members of the Ministry, as well as the prime minister.

Those involved are then asked to say the Official Oaths, which includes promising to be “true and faithful” to the queen.

There's often a short walk outside to wave at supporters and visitors, too.

However, unlike our U.S. counterparts, there’s no celebrity presence, concert performances or grand public celebrations.

That said, we wouldn't be surprised if Canadian officials celebrate privately in their own way!
