The Canada-US Border Will Officially Stay Closed Until Mid-July (VIDEO)
Thinking of travelling south of the border next month? You will have to wait a little bit longer. The Canada-U.S. border closure has been extended for another 30 days. With that, non-essential travel will be banned until the middle of July.
During a press conference on June 16, Justin Trudeau announced that people still won't be able to travel between Canada and the United States come June 21.
Once again, the border closure agreement has been extended by both governments for at least another month.
With this 30-day extension, the border between Canada and the U.S. will remain closed to all non-essential travel until July 21.
So, if you were thinking about a summer road trip to the States, you'll have to hold off on that.
"This is an important decision that will keep people in both of our countries safe," Trudeau explained.
The only people who are allowed to cross over will be those moving between the countries for essential work, and immediate family members coming into Canada.
With the closure set to be in place until July 21, it will have been four months since non-essential travel occurred between the neighbouring countries.
While the border is closed, it seems like some Americans are still coming into Canada.
A Texas family has reportedly used a loophole to cross the border by saying that they were going to Alaska which requires driving through Canada. However, they went to Banff instead.
Trudeau had said earlier that his government is looking into reports of these types of incidences.
“We need to make sure we’re able to apply the rules consistently and that we’re doing everything necessary to keep Canadians safe at this important time," he said.
Immediate family members are allowed to come from the U.S. into Canada as part of an exception to the border closure.
They need to show no COVID-19 symptoms, have no reason to believe they have the virus, come solely to be with a family member and visit for at least 15 days.
Everybody who comes into the country has to quarantine for at least two weeks.
It remains to be seen if that will be impacted by the border closure.
