After a formal review into her workplace, Governor General Julie Payette resigned and released a statement about the situation at Rideau Hall.

"Everyone has a right to a healthy and safe work environment, at all times and under all circumstances," she wrote. "It appears this was not always the case at the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General."

Tensions have arisen at Rideau Hall over the past few months and for that, I am sorry. Julie Payette

This comes after allegations were made in July 2020 that there was a toxic work environment at Rideau Hall.

At that time, multiple current and former staff members had gone to various news outlets with complaints of bullying and harassment.

That triggered an official review, which was just completed.

While the results of that review have not been made public, Global reports that sources said it was "scathing" and left Payette with no choice other than to step down.

In her statement, the Governor General makes it clear that no "formal complaints or official grievances" were brought up during her time in this role.

However, she says she takes the allegations very seriously and fully supported the review.

"We all experience things differently, but we should always strive to do better, and be attentive to one another’s perceptions," Payette said.
